With the gradual defeat of the soldiers by the Chinese Communists, rumors spread that the KMT is planning a retreat to Taiwan. Soldiers are curious about the popular depiction of Taiwan as a place where bananas grow in abundance and they fantasize about an affluent island. Two simple Chinese soldiers are evacuated to Taiwan along with the rest of the military; they haven't the slightest idea how far away Taiwan is, nor how long they will be there.
